Tuesday’s Pick: A Flying Squirrels Game!
Today and tomorrow Richmond’s very own Flying Squirrels will be playing at the Diamond against the Altoona Curve from Altoona, Pennsylvania. The games start at 6:35 PM and are a great way to share an evening with the family while on break as you don’t have to worry about getting everyone to school in the morning. Enjoying baseball at the Diamond is a spring and summer favorite of the Ellen Clark Team.
The Flying Squirrels are a double A minor league team that came to be in 1972 as the West Haven Yankees (72′-79′). Before coming to Richmond, the team had many other names as well: West Haven White Caps (80′), West Haven A’s (81′-82′), Albany A’s (83′), Albany-Colonie A’s, Colony Yankees (84′), Norwich Navigators (95′-05′), and the Connecticut Defenders (06′-09′). The team announced their move to Richmond in 2009, and shortly after a poll in the Richmond Times Dispatch aided in the selection of their new name. The Flying Squirrels played their first season at the Diamond in 2010 and have been with us since. They are apart of the Eastern League in the Western Division of minor league baseball.
Why we chose a Squirrels Game:
Entertainment: The games are suitable for kids and parents of all ages! The Flying Squirrels always have fun activities to get a laugh out of the crowd or interact between innings.
Fun Promotions: Tonight is “Tip of the Cap Tuesday”! The first 1,000 fans ages 15 and up will receive a free outdoorsman hat from Coca Cola and CBS 6. There are promotions/events for all games of the season.
Location: The Diamond is close to many local parks, museums, restaurants, and shopping. You can find plenty to do before or after the game. It is also close to the 95/64 interchange for easy accessibility for those who live in the surrounding counties.
NUTZY and NUSTASHA: The Flying Squirrels team mascots. Not only do they pep up the team and fans at the games, but they also engage in the community events, visit area schools, and charitable fundraisers
THE FOOD!: Squirrel-y fries, hot dogs, peanuts, ice cream galore! At a baseball game, we leave health worries to the wind. Have fun and eat happy!
The Squirrel Tail Kids Club: Kids 14 and under can join for free and receive all kinds of perks for the whole season including free admission to Sunday games and playing catch on the field before every Sunday game. See their site for more details.
The Weather: Today’s high will be 86 with a low of 59. Tomorrow’s high will be 79 with a low of 52. Not too hold or cold, but bring a jacket if you plan on staying through the ninth inning.
Ticket prices range from $9 (general admission) to $14 (field). You can also purchase season tickets and packages. The Diamond is also a great place for children’s birthday parties or office events.
